By Peter G. Stark By W. Hohenschuh About 3 years ago I bought a Taylor 1470 Digital Cooking Thermometer/Timer. At the time it was THE thermometer. It was cheap, it allowed you to set alarms for time or temperature, it seemed reasonably accurate, and it just worked. It finally died about a month ago and while I was disappointed, I used the opportunity to upgrade in a sense and picked up a few features that I had been missing before.
This unit is still absolutely accurate, it is reliable, fish, poultry, and meat all come out how I would expect for a given temperature. It still lets me program alarms for time or temperature. The construction is roughly the same quality, but having built in temperature information is fantastic! Better yet is being able to set my own temperatures. Rare to me is probably more rare than it is for the USDA. Its great to have reminders for what the safe temperature for chicken is, but its even better to be able to be able to set it 5 degrees lower so that I can pull it out and it doesn't overshoot after pulling it from the oven.
The unit comes preset with temperatures for all major meats (beef, chicken, turkey, lamb, ground chicken/beef/pork/turkey, etc) which I like buy my girlfriend likes better because it means I don't have to make her look up safe temps to avoid getting sick. in addition to that it has a "program" mode. The program mode (which shows up as PGM which apparently doesn't mean pigeon meat...yea not my smartest first thought) lets you set any temperature you want (technically all of the modes do), but it lets up you set a temperature without messing up your other presets which is nice.
Overall the build is pretty good. The magnets on the back of the unit are plenty strong enough to hold it up on the oven door. The probe cord is woven metal strands and seems quite durable. The buttons feel nice and don't stick at all. Overall I really couldn't be happier. The only thing I'd like would be a wireless probe (which for the record I'm not sure exist), but for the price I couldn't be happier. This is a quality leave in probe thermometer and I recommend it highly.
5 stars ***** Got this product and set for medium-rare beef roast. Put to probe into the roast and put roast into oven. Withing one minute the alarm was going off (an awful sound, by the way). Opened oven and examined and the temperature was just reading "HI" and overcooked.
I may be missing something, but this doesn't add up. If anyone can point out what I'm doing wrong, please do. Otherwise this is going back ASAP.
UPDATE: I tested the probe in boiling water and it seems pretty accurate. We're at ~5,600 feet above sea level and probe read 202-03 in boiling water--which is almost exactly what I expected. When the roast was done and OUT of the oven I inserted the probe again and the temp came up to about 138-degrees, which also made sense. Maybe I pushed the probe too far into the roast and hit the pan??? I'm going to see if I can figure this one out.
UPDATE-Feb 13, 2013: I contacted the company via email about my difficulties and they responded quickly by sending out a replacement. Can't complain about that. I didn't get any advice about anything I might be doing incorrectly, so I'm assuming the symptoms point to a faulty unit. But I'm still puzzled about why it reads the correct temperature on boiling water and worked OUTSIDE the oven OK ??????
I haven't had a chance to try the new one yet, but will do so soon and report back. In the meantime, I'm upping my score to 3 stars, based on the quick response with a replacement unit.
UPDATE: Feb 20: Finally got a chance to retry the replacement unit, sent by HIPE. I still had the original so I thought I would try them both at the same time. Same drill: prepared a small tri-tip roast, although I was worried it might be too thin, and inserted both probes into the raw meat and popped into the oven. As in the original test, the first unit just went nuts almost immediately with a loud squawking alarm. Nothing from the second (replacement) unit. In fact, the replacement seems to have functioned properly. I had the alarm set to 135 and it went off when the meat hit that temperature. My wife thought that it didn't look cooked enough, so we raised the target temp to 145 and the alarm functioned properly at that temp.
I can't attest to the accuracy of the target temps, but that's not a major concern since we can learn to adjust to a temp that cooks the meat the way we wish.
So overall, I'm going to jack this up to 4 stars. It's a good value. The HIPE company has demonstrated good service. I still have to knock at least one star off for the fact that the first unit was a dud and that you cannot (at this time) buy replacement probes. Reliability/longevity are still to be determined. I'll update this review with any relevant info that comes up.
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. By Stephen T. Porter I bought two, because they were so inexpensive, and I can now monitor two steaks (or any meat) on the grill or in the oven/broiler at the same time, or one Lg steak with one probe in a thin section and one in a thick section for ultra precise temperature readings. I'm going to buy more as Christmas stocking stuffers for some of my buddies, because they work so well. The three different alarm tones lets you know when you are 10 degrees below your target temp, at target, and then 10 degrees over. The alarms can be set at your desired temp. or turned off. I haven't tried any of the other meat thermometer brands, but from the research I've done, I think Consumer Reports would agree with me, that I think this meat thermometer is a good one.
