By Peter G. Stark By W. Hohenschuh About 3 years ago I bought a Taylor 1470 Digital Cooking Thermometer/Timer. At the time it was THE thermometer. It was cheap, it allowed you to set alarms for time or temperature, it seemed reasonably accurate, and it just worked. It finally died about a month ago and while I was disappointed, I used the opportunity to upgrade in a sense and picked up a few features that I had been missing before.

This unit is still absolutely accurate, it is reliable, fish, poultry, and meat all come out how I would expect for a given temperature. It still lets me program alarms for time or temperature. The construction is roughly the same quality, but having built in temperature information is fantastic! Better yet is being able to set my own temperatures. Rare to me is probably more rare than it is for the USDA. Its great to have reminders for what the safe temperature for chicken is, but its even better to be able to be able to set it 5 degrees lower so that I can pull it out and it doesn't overshoot after pulling it from the oven.

The unit comes preset with temperatures for all major meats (beef, chicken, turkey, lamb, ground chicken/beef/pork/turkey, etc) which I like buy my girlfriend likes better because it means I don't have to make her look up safe temps to avoid getting sick. in addition to that it has a "program" mode. The program mode (which shows up as PGM which apparently doesn't mean pigeon meat...yea not my smartest first thought) lets you set any temperature you want (technically all of the modes do), but it lets up you set a temperature without messing up your other presets which is nice.

Overall the build is pretty good. The magnets on the back of the unit are plenty strong enough to hold it up on the oven door. The probe cord is woven metal strands and seems quite durable. The buttons feel nice and don't stick at all. Overall I really couldn't be happier. The only thing I'd like would be a wireless probe (which for the record I'm not sure exist), but for the price I couldn't be happier. This is a quality leave in probe thermometer and I recommend it highly.

5 stars ***** Got this product and set for medium-rare beef roast. Put to probe into the roast and put roast into oven. Withing one minute the alarm was going off (an awful sound, by the way). Opened oven and examined and the temperature was just reading "HI" and overcooked.

I may be missing something, but this doesn't add up. If anyone can point out what I'm doing wrong, please do. Otherwise this is going back ASAP.

UPDATE: I tested the probe in boiling water and it seems pretty accurate. We're at ~5,600 feet above sea level and probe read 202-03 in boiling water--which is almost exactly what I expected. When the roast was done and OUT of the oven I inserted the probe again and the temp came up to about 138-degrees, which also made sense. Maybe I pushed the probe too far into the roast and hit the pan??? I'm going to see if I can figure this one out.

UPDATE-Feb 13, 2013: I contacted the company via email about my difficulties and they responded quickly by sending out a replacement. Can't complain about that. I didn't get any advice about anything I might be doing incorrectly, so I'm assuming the symptoms point to a faulty unit. But I'm still puzzled about why it reads the correct temperature on boiling water and worked OUTSIDE the oven OK ??????

I haven't had a chance to try the new one yet, but will do so soon and report back. In the meantime, I'm upping my score to 3 stars, based on the quick response with a replacement unit.

UPDATE: Feb 20: Finally got a chance to retry the replacement unit, sent by HIPE. I still had the original so I thought I would try them both at the same time. Same drill: prepared a small tri-tip roast, although I was worried it might be too thin, and inserted both probes into the raw meat and popped into the oven. As in the original test, the first unit just went nuts almost immediately with a loud squawking alarm. Nothing from the second (replacement) unit. In fact, the replacement seems to have functioned properly. I had the alarm set to 135 and it went off when the meat hit that temperature. My wife thought that it didn't look cooked enough, so we raised the target temp to 145 and the alarm functioned properly at that temp.

I can't attest to the accuracy of the target temps, but that's not a major concern since we can learn to adjust to a temp that cooks the meat the way we wish.

So overall, I'm going to jack this up to 4 stars. It's a good value. The HIPE company has demonstrated good service. I still have to knock at least one star off for the fact that the first unit was a dud and that you cannot (at this time) buy replacement probes. Reliability/longevity are still to be determined. I'll update this review with any relevant info that comes up.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. By Stephen T. Porter I bought two, because they were so inexpensive, and I can now monitor two steaks (or any meat) on the grill or in the oven/broiler at the same time, or one Lg steak with one probe in a thin section and one in a thick section for ultra precise temperature readings. I'm going to buy more as Christmas stocking stuffers for some of my buddies, because they work so well. The three different alarm tones lets you know when you are 10 degrees below your target temp, at target, and then 10 degrees over. The alarms can be set at your desired temp. or turned off. I haven't tried any of the other meat thermometer brands, but from the research I've done, I think Consumer Reports would agree with me, that I think this meat thermometer is a good one.

I bought one of these a few months ago and have been using it to a moderate level of satisfaction. I have tried it with iPhone, iPod touch, and my wife's iPad. Due to the awful battery life of the iPhone and iPod touch, I primarily use it with the iPad. I use it with two probes to monitor the temperature of a chosen cut of meat and the internal temperature of my Primo XL smoker.

This product has so much potential but I'm only giving it 3 stars. Why? Well, for one thing, the build quality is a little bit suspect. I have a white unit, and the plastic housing doesn't feel very tough or rugged at all. I wouldn't want to see the unit take a fall onto a hard floor - the plastic has a flimsy, almost brittle feel to it. While I would like it to be more rugged, it's not my primary concern. My biggest concern/complaint is that so far, the iGrill is ONLY compatible with their own homegrown IOS iGrill app. The app itself is okay and provides some basic functionality, and is generally fine for short duration cooks, but when I am doing "low and slow" cooks (of up to 30 hour duration), I need a more robust app with a few more features.

1) The iPad app just closes on its own periodically. This means you lose all the data that's been collected on the temperature trendlines.
2) There is no way to log the data to a file. I'd love to have the app just pump it into a csv file or even "to the cloud" in google docs. When I am cooking new things on the smoker, it's great to be able to go back and see exactly how long it took to cook items and how it correlated to the grill temp
3) There is a target temperature alarm that you can set independently for both probes, but when I leave the smoker going all day long or overnight, I'd love to be able to have a LOW temp alert an alarm that alerts me if the grill temp dips too low.
4) This is one of the things I hate about IOS, but this app won't operate in the background, so if you're using your iPad/iPhone/iPod touch to monitor a long cook, you can't really use that device for any other apps without losing your temperature data. Of course, when the app crashes on its own like it does, it doesn't much matter.

Honestly I would forget about those app shortcomings if there were a full featured app available for Mac OSX and Windows 7. Most laptops have bluetooth adapters and you can get a cheap USB bluetooth adapter for a desktop computer for less than $10. I hope iDevices strongly considers doing this or at the very least releasing an SDK or API so independent developers can create their own apps to communicate with the iGrill. If that happens I would give the iGrill a bump to 4.5 stars. (To reach 5 stars it still needs to be more rugged).

Just a few other notes
1) battery life seems pretty good. 4 fresh batteries seem to go for at least 50-60 hours of use.
2) the display on the device is nice for a quick temp check when your wife confiscates her iPad, but it can be difficult to read in bright light, at least on the unit like mine with the white plastic housing.
3) i bought my iGrill at the apple store because I'm impatient and didn't want to wait weeks to order one online. Unfortunately it's only sold with a single probe at the Apple Store. I ordered a spare probe directly from iDevices but they rip you off on shipping and you end up paying around $30 for the 2nd probe. The probes seem accurate but like the iGrill itself, I am a little suspicious of the durability - the wire lead is quite thin, so $30 is a ripoff. It's better to buy the bundle that includes 2 probes with the base unit.
4) I don't expect the white housing to hold up very well over time. If the Apple Store had it in black, I definitely would have purchased the black one. That white plastic gets dirty easily and I'm pretty certain it will yellow as it ages.

UPDATE August 11, 2011:
It's been a few months since I wrote my initial review above, and coincidentally, (almost as if on cue) an updated version of the iGrill app came out within a few days of that first review being released. Much to my delight, a lot of features were added to the new version 2.0 app, including items #2 and #3 in the list above. Unfortunately, there are still some glitches. I have not been able to get the CSV file function to work at all - it just freezes and crashes the app. The pdf function works, but for very long cooks, the scaling on the graph is messed up so that the labels on the x-axis all overlap each other, making them completely illegible. The updated app seems to be a bit more stable - I have witnessed a few lockups and freezes here and there but the last 2 long cooks I've done, it didn't crash at all. I had a few issues where it wouldn't link up with the outdoor unit for several minutes, or it would launch and then close immediately, but I think I have it figured out now. Basically, launch the app and turn on the iGrill device as soon as the app loads. If it doesn't display a temperature right away, just wait a few minutes and it will show up. Another glitch I've found that impacts the device's usefulness is if one of the probes is over 125F when you turn the iGrill on, it seems to lock everything up. This happened once when the iGrill app crashed in the middle of a cook, and in an effort to get everything going again, I pulled the batteries out of the iGrill device. When I replaced them and turned the iGrill on, the alarm sounded immediately and the iGrill app couldn't connect, so eventually I figured out I had to remove the probes from the food in the grill to get it restarted. It was quite a frustrating ordeal.

I hate throwing away alkaline batteries so I use rechargeable AAs in almost everything. The iGrill works pretty well with the NiMh batteries that I have, but the "low battery" threshold in the iGrill app should be lowered. Due to the slightly lower voltage of rechargeable AAs, the iGrill erroneously thinks the batteries are running out of juice and it throws false warnings. It will show up within minutes after putting in a freshly charged set of AAs, but then the iGrill works fine for a good 40-60 hours even though it thinks the batteries are low.

Regarding probe accuracy, mine seem to be pretty accurate. I tested both of the probes that I have and both of them read within 1 degree of each other across a wide range of temps. I have tested them against a digital J/K thermometer and the readings are within 1-2 degrees across the range of tested temps, so I think these are accurate enough for cooking. The wires are braided metal but they tangle easily and compared to the probes on my other meat thermometers, they seem rather fragile, so I try to be careful with them when wrapping or unwrapping the leads for storage.

54 of 55 people found the following review helpful. By scottincarmel By Slimjimtell I've used various grill thermometers over the years, for the past few years I've been using the Weber wireless unit. I was never satisfied with that, it seemed like it was always losing its signal at an inopportune moment (and I LOVE most Weber products).
When I saw the iGrill become available, I figured it was worth a shot. The $100 price tag concerned me a bit, but this is a case of "ya get what ya pay for". I've only used this thing in the heat of battle a couple of times, but it worked flawlessly. The software is a bit clunky, which I assume will improve over time (I'd give it 5 stars but for that), but all in all, I think this thing is well worth the money. And it definitely has a coolness factor that no other grill thermometer can hope to emulate. Well done! (pun intended). By J. Palmer My Williams Sonoma probe thermo just stopped working. So in my search I came across the IGrill and saw some pretty weak reviews. I don't take much stock in most reviews as most are just upset buyers that don't take the time to work out minor kinks in a new product. So on my own judgement and knowing that the apple store sells these units, I bought one. Apple is pretty good about not selling products that don't uphold their high standards of quality.

My use...
Large Big Green Egg
IPad 2

Quality
seems to be good.
Yes, it's plastic, but seems to be durable

Meat Probes
Temps are Accurate
Length could be a little longer

Ambient temp Probe
Very accurate
Comes with clip to mount through dome.
I used at grate level and is very accurate
Bought an alligator clip for the grate.

App (ver. 2 new app)
Works good
MUST turn igrill on FIRST then turn on App.
MUST go into settings and adjust auto shut off to NEVER

Needs Future upgrades
Alarm for LOW temp
Fix little crashing bugs
Fix sleep mode
Remove the manual style timer, give option for digital timer.
Add ability to name the probe like in the first APP.
Open up to other app developers to create new and cool apps
Multiple device support.
Create android app...you could get additional sales!!

Would I recommend this?
YES
Is it a little pricey?
YES
Is it really cool?
YES
Does it works as stated?
YES
Is there room for improvement?
YES

By t bone By D. Hunter Works as advertized. It has great range, and I love the braided steel probe wire, a lot better than normal rubber ones. If you want to cook a truly unbelievably awesome steak. You need Meathead's temperature guide and a quality digital thermometer.

The range of the ET 732 is excellent. I live in a 95 year old house with super thick walls. Have no problem getting remote temps 75 ft away. I do recommend you buy the 6 ft probes. I got mine from OneCountyShop. The 3 footers that come with the thermometer work but the extra three feet really makes it easier on a larger grill.

The guide makes it easy to get all meats cooked to perfection. I especially like the Chef's temp recommendations. The only other thing you need to do is go to Meatheads website amazingribs.com.

Hands down it has the best advice and recipes for cooking any meat to perfection. Backed up with sound science and proven techniques you cannot go wrong following his advice.

Now instead of cooking steaks that were OK but seldom great I cook steaks that rival those served in the best high end steak houses every time.

The best part is you to can learn to cook this way. All you need is a high quality thermometer like the ET 732, Meatheads cooking guide, do your research at amazingribs.com, and get to know your local butcher.

Most highly recommend.

Meathead's Temperature Magnet

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. This must have tool has worked out great for my smoker. It has now made it easy for me to set and keep the right temp for my Landmann Smoker and Weber Genesis. After checking with the Maverick ET 732 I learned my smoker was reading 20 degrees higher and my Weber was off by 60 degrees. Was able to set my smoker at 225 for 5 hours for the best baby backs I ever smoked. The alarm which I set between 200 and 250 sounded off when I was out front waxing my car, went out back to learn the flame had gone out on my propane smoker. Glad I had my wireless remote with me in the garage or my ribs would have been sittin cold for an hour not to mention the propane which would have been leaking out. I also like the you tube vids on this product that show how easy it is to set your temps. I've had no problems with the probes, just wash the tips with soap and water and store away in a shoe box like I do so you don't crimp the wires till your next bar b q. I do set a small table next to my smoker to set the transmitter on while cooking. This is a great tool and well worth the price.

With a range of 100 feet, the thermometer features a digital LCD screen and remote wireless probe. The thermometer has a range from 0 to 392 degrees F. A detachable belt clip and table stand makes it easy to keep the remote at your side or in arm's reach. And, not limiting the menu, the unit programs for beef, lamb, veal, hamburger, pork, turkey, chicken, and fish; signaling when meats are rare, medium-rare, medium, and well-done. The audio alert signals when the food is almost ready, ready, overcooked, and when you're out of range. A low battery indicator means optimal reliability. The purchase includes two AA and two AAA batteries to power both the transmitter and the remote receiver.

I purchased this product because we have a four-story house and I did not want to be stuck near the kitchen to hear the temperature gauge sound. The range on this product is exceptional. Being three floors away from the base unit was not too far for the receiving sensor; it still functioned as it was designed. I have also been outside the house in the yard and the sensor still worked appropriately.

I use this product mostly in the oven. If takes the guess work out of large cuts of meat. The beef temperature that is preset is too high for my taste. But, I know this and just monitor the temperature and know that the alarm will not sound until the meat is overcooked, in my opinion.

As one of the other viewers indicated you do have to "synchronize" the base and receiving until by pressing the reset button on both items after installing the batteries and turning both products on. Check the directions, they spell out the process.

The belt clip and/or table stand is a nice feature of the product.

Another highly recommend product. This is the way to go. Perfect results every time. No more wondering if it's done. Whether you BBQ or smoke steak, hamburgers, chicken, veal, turkeys, pork - know when the right temperature has been reached each and every time. One MAJOR tip - the main unit and the probe both require to be RESET before the first use in order to sync up both signal and reception. The reset button is located inside each device's battery compartment. If your unit doesn't work right out of the box, then this is most likely the reason. With both units on, press the reset button.

50 of 54 people found the following review helpful. By The Big Guy By A. Sorensen I like OS products, especially their weather stations, which I use. But I cannot recommend these grill thermometers. I threw both in the trash after they gave bizzare readings. Today, I was set to grill a prime rib roast....the OS probe (the one I had NOT thrown away because of the same problem) registered 199 degrees out of the refrigerator.

I compared to my Maverick thermometer, bought also on Amazon. It registered the correct 52 degrees.

I covet my meats done to perfection, and so far OS has not done the job. The Maverick dual senor thermometer has performed very well in my Weber grill and my Charbroil fryer. And yes, I know how to use digital, remote thermometers....lol.

For my money, try the Maverick.....good performer and does not give you wacko temp readings like BOTH of my OS did.

This is a good product for the price . Easy to use intuitive controls , display easy to read , temperature is accurate . There is no on/off button but this isn't a big deal as the battery will probably still last for years even with it always on .

You can set the alarm to go off when it reaches whatever temperature you set it for and the alarm is nice and loud . The reason I got this was for yogurt making . I wanted to have an alarm to let me know when the milk had cooled to the proper temperature instead of having to check it every 15 minutes . One problem though : You can only use the temperature alarm feature when going *UP TO* a temperature . If you have the milk at 180 degrees and set the temperature alarm to go off at 115 degrees the alarm goes off immediately because the temp has already reached or surpassed 115 degrees . In other words this thermometer is worthless for what I had hoped to use it for . You cannot set the temperature alarm to *GO DOWN TO* a given temperature which is too bad . Still, this is a well built easy to use thermometer ... just not what I had hoped for.

97 of 115 people found the following review helpful. By Jason Baker By Keith Faulkner By Davejostef I got this for Christmas (it was on my wishlist) and I was delighted. It preformed well the first couple of times I used it. The third time, it put up an error code (Hi). When I looked at the instructions, I found that this means the cable has been damaged and needs to be replaced. What the &@%#??? I used the thing THREE times. Sent an e-mail to the company about it and, of course, got no response. My advice? Look elsewhere. Disappointed... A common problem with previous Polder thermometers I have owned is that if you get the bare, metal probe cord wet, water can get into the probe itself and ruin it by throwing off the temperature readings. I have thrown away several probes because of this, especially since I use these thermometers for beer making.

Some reviewers complained that the cord was rubber and not metal like in the picture, when in fact this is a HUGE improvement over the old probes and that it appears to still be the metal, braided cable only it's now covered in the watertight rubber seal. Us home brewers used to go to great lengths to try and waterproof these cables ourselves. Thankfully now Polder has done it for us.

I can assure you that the temperature reads accurately since I used it in conjunction with a candy thermometer the first couple times I used it. The alarm and timer functions are invaluable. The pan clip is what prompted me to get this in the first place; the watertight probe was just a pleasant surprise.

Although you cannot technically turn it off, the amount of power this thing uses from a single AAA battery (included) is negligible and single AAA batteries are not going to break the bank. Overall, this is the best Polder thermometer I have owned yet, mainly thanks to its new watertight probe cable. Thanks Polder.

By BBQ King I've been thinking about getting one of these and I chose this seller due to past purchases. As expected transaction was smooth and fast delivery. As for the product.. This is the best investment ever made. I love cooking on grill, even on cold days. If you like that charred taste and wood smell you know what I am talking about. Up until now either I had go out to check temperature every now and then or stand outside. Now if we had a gathering or kids were playing out in the yard then it was fine but otherwise it's just annoying, for me and everyone else, keep opening and shutting backdoor, getting up during family game night or during TV shows. I hooked this thing so I can keep an eye on temp from inside the house and it has definitely saved me many trips to the grill. Not to mention when I used to open the lid to check temp, heat/smoke was out of the grill and on my face. Not too complicated, it won't give you advice on how to cook or direction to your grill but it does what it's meant to do. And that's simple as it can get...

I used the thermometer about 7 or 8 times and it stopped working. I have seen several reviews complaining that the probe fails so I'm hoping that's the problem.

Update 2/27/08: I ordered a new probe from Brookstone for $25 (incl. shipping) and it is a much sturdier design than the original. I assume they were getting a lot of complaints and returns so they redesigned it. So far the new probe is working fine. Interesting to note, I gave a negative review of this product on their web site and they never published it, although they sent me a thank you note for my review.

34 of 35 people found the following review helpful. I received this for Father's Day last year. I was skeptical - but it actually works. I can put some tri-tip in the smoker and hang in the pool or chat with guests while keeping an eye on the large LCD display. The range is very good, I can sit in the pool with the display next to me on the deck (at least 20-30 feet away) or go back inside the house. It beeps and talks to you a few minutes before your food is at the desired temperature. I use it primarily for beef, and the settings (rare, medium, etc.) are pretty accurate. This is especially good for large cuts of beef since it is often difficult to gauge whether the meat is pink inside or not. I would highly recommend this. Easy to set-up, then all you do is select the type of meat and the desired cooking level. Pork and seafood default to only one setting choice (well-done) but you can just use the temperature readout to cook to the desired temp.

23 of 23 people found the following review helpful. By J. Bob By Avodoc By A Gamer at Heart I have owned several of these and given a few away as gifts. I LOVE how well they work when they are brand new so when mine failed I bought new ones assuming I just got a lemon. THEY ARE ALL LEMONS. My observation of several units is that the average service life is from 3 to 6 uses. Sometimes a new probe fixes the problem ($20 ea) sometimes nothing (including hitting the reset button) helps. Look at other product reviews on different web sites; they all complain about how quickly the unit fails. You may also notice that several different brands all look alike with the same screen indicating that they are all the same unit sold under different brand names.

With all the bad reviews of these things the firms selling these things should consider the ethics of selling something this expensive that only works a few times. Unfortunately the other brands of remote thermometers, from what I have seen, all seem to fail after only a few uses. This is a real drag because when they work, they work great, and I guess that's why I am so annoyed.
